Last year, I began the column by discussing a widely debated topic in fantasy hockey. Do defensemen really make a difference in fantasy pools? As much as many fantasy poolies want to deny it, defensemen do play an important role on influencing the outcome of your fantasy league. Let’s visit this example:

Back by popular demand, for the next four weeks we’ll run through a series of columns that will highlight players who are earmarked for success, based on a few selected criteria, along with those who should be on your list as a potential sell-high candidate. We’ll begin this series by examining the two top goalies from each of the 15 Western Conference teams.

The start of the 2009-2010 NHL season is well and truly underway. There were certainly plenty of surprises, as well as plenty of hair-pulling mistakes. The main thing that you need to keep reminding yourself is that it’s only six days into the new season, and not to panic too much, there’s still plenty of time left in the season, before you call a fire-sale. Similar to last season I’ll provide you with weekly updates, so that you have access to the latest news that’s been happening from the Western Conference front.

Monday night, Dobber passed up the opportunity to participate in the Y! Friends and Family draft, so I had the privilege in taking Dobber’s spot in the league. I’ll recap the draft along with my overall thoughts about how the draft went round-by-round and hopefully take on some opinions as to what you think I can do to better represent our DobberNation community. WARNING: This is quite a long read, so if you just want to view the team just fast forward to the last page of the column.

Last week my column was related to players who were being overrated in Yahoo Mock Drafts. This week I’m going to do a complete 180 and take a look at players who are undervalued and unappreciated in similar mock drafts. I participated in random Yahoo mock drafts ranging from eight to 14 teams from H2H to Roto leagues with standard settings. This is what I found based on the size of the leagues:

This weekend I participated in 10 Yahoo Mock Drafts to gain a better grasp of what’s been going on in fantasy hockey drafts and thought that I’d pass my findings onto you Dobberities. I participated in random drafts ranging from eight to 14 teams from H2H to Roto leagues with standard settings. This is what I found.

It’s not hard to judge a player’s fantasy value based on an overall yearly performance, but if you break it down further while taking advantage of trends it might just give you enough of an edge to push you over the top at the end of the season. This week we’ll take a look at eight hot starters that you may be able to take advantage of early on in this upcoming season.
