Roos Lets Loose

Despite never having laced up a pair of skates (except for those of his two young sons) and growing up in Red Sox crazed Massachusetts, Rick Roos has been a huge hockey fan nearly all of his life.  Inspired by often wearing a Canadiens jersey to the old Boston Garden (it’s a long story…) and living to tell about it, Rick started to join fantasy hockey leagues back in the 90s, where he found himself waiting eagerly by a fax machine for weekly stats updates.  He has since been in – and won – leagues featuring elite fantasy hockey writers. In real life, Rick is an attorney, which made him the perfect choice to write his previous “Holding Court” column on DobberHockey, where he debated both sides of a fantasy hockey issue and rendered a verdict for readers to debate. Later, for several years, he did similar for the popular “Cage Match” series. Today, Roos is freewheeling through a variety of monthly pieces: Forum Buzz takes a look at some hot topics our readers are discussing in the forum; Mailbag allows readers to write in to Roos with fantasy hockey questions; Goldipucks and the Three Skaters takes a look at three players (in the spirit of the old Cage Match, except Roos determines who is too hot, too cold…and ju-u-ust right); The Tournament is where Roos polls the readers and the forum community on a certain topic, just the way Tourneys ran in the old Cage Match, until a winning player in that topic is declared.

Who is the better fantasy own: Evgeny Kuznetsov or Ryan Johansen?

By |2017-04-05T08:04:16-04:00April 5th, 2017|Roos Lets Loose|

In last week’s match, we covered two of the most pleasant surprises for 2016-17; so let’s pull a 180 and tackle two players who didn’t meet lofty expectations – Evgeny Kuznetsov and Ryan Johansen. At 24, both should be entering their prime; yet instead, it’s not even clear if/when they’ll again equal their previous highs [...]

Goldipucks and the Three Skaters (aka breaking down Nash, Marchand and Draisaitl)

By |2017-02-15T09:42:34-05:00February 15th, 2017|Roos Lets Loose|

This week I’m trying something new. The idea is to take the “pick a winner” concept of Cage Match and make it appeal to a wider audience. How? Covering more players (three, instead of two) and focusing on each player individually (versus by comparison) within a shorter column, yet still providing the thorough information [...]

Cage Match: Who is the better fantasy own – Sean Monahan or Charlie Coyle?

By |2017-02-07T15:50:10-05:00February 8th, 2017|Roos Lets Loose|

Like last week, today’s battle is between one player (Sean Monahan) who achieved early success but has yet to take that all-important next step, and another (Charlie Coyle) who had disappointed for his entire career but has broken out this season. Can Monahan improve; and if so, when might he turn a corner? Can Coyle [...]

Cage Match: Mark Stone vs. Mikael Granlund – who is the better fantasy own?

By |2017-02-01T08:04:04-05:00February 1st, 2017|Roos Lets Loose|

This week’s battle is between Mark Stone and Mikael Granlund. For Stone, 2016-17 could be his third straight 61-65 point season, while for Granlund it would represent the first time he’s bested even 44 points. Does Stone have another gear, or has he peaked? Is Granlund breaking out, or is his 2016-17 production entirely - [...]
