Fantasy Take – Latest NHL Moves

The New Jersey Devils have signed winger Ondrej Palat to a five-year contract worth $6 million per season. Palat had a down regular season by his standards, scoring 49 points (18 G, 31 A) in 77 games. He elevated his game in the playoffs, scoring 21 points in 23 games. In fact, only two players [...]

The Anaheim Ducks have signed center Ryan Strome to a five-year contract with a $5 million cap hit. A former fifth overall pick (2011), Strome’s career didn’t start to pick up until the Rangers signed Artemi Panarin in 2019 and matched the two on the same line. Over an 82-game season, Strome was on pace [...]

The Washington Capitals have acquired Connor Brown from the Ottawa Senators for a second-round pick in 2024. Brown scored 39 points (10 G, 29 A) in 64 games for the Sens in 2021-22. He’s been a remarkably consistent scorer during his three seasons in Ottawa with an 82-game pace of around 50 points each season. [...]

The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed winger Johnny Gaudreau to a seven-year contract with an AAV of $9.75 million. Whoa. Philadelphia, New Jersey, and Long Island were believed to be Gaudreau’s preferred destinations after he informed Calgary that he would not be re-signing there. However, the Blue Jackets swooped in with an offer that Gaudreau [...]

The biggest shocker of Free Agent Frenzy had nothing to do with free agents, or at least not directly. It was the trade of Max Pacioretty and Dylan Coghlan to Carolina in exchange for future considerations. Those aren’t typos, it was a straight cap dump: https://twitter.com/DarrenDreger/status/1547337818334269442 Let’s break this down. What Carolina Gets While Pacioretty [...]

Seattle finally gets Kraken on free agency season, adding winger Andre Burakovsky for five years at $5.5M AAV, as well as Andrew Poturalski for two seasons. The team also announced that they signed their top pick Shane Wright (or is it Shane Wrightski?) to his entry-level contract. The Kraken get: A big, steady player who [...]

The Red Wings brought in another free agent, adding Dominik Kubalik who was strangely not tendered as an RFA in Chicago. He received a two-year contract worth $2.5 million per season. What the Red Wings are getting: Kubalik will be 26 by the time the season starts, and is just entering his prime. He’s also [...]

Detroit continued a very busy day of signings as they got their second-line centre in Andrew Copp, bolstered the back-end by adding Ben Chiarot and Olli Maatta, and then went and got some winger help in the form of David Perron. We got it announced a few hours after free agency opened: https://twitter.com/renlavoietva/status/1547295431339687937 It was [...]

The Ducks have been fairly quiet through free agency, but their one notable move has been to bring in Frank Vatrano on a three-year deal worth $3.65M per season. Here was my initial thought on Vatrano before he signed: https://twitter.com/alexdmaclean/status/1546468208223330304 What the Ducks are getting: Vatrano had struggled lately with the Panthers, and with the [...]

The Dallas Stars have signed forward Mason Marchment to a four-year contract with a $4.5 million AAV. Marchment is capitalizing on a surprising breakout season, scoring 47 points in 54 games (0.87 PTS/GP). He also plays with a physical edge with 114 hits and 53 penalty minutes over those 54 games. If he can’t repeat [...]
