Fantasy Take – Latest NHL Moves

The Chicago Blackhawks have traded winger Brandon Hagel and two 4th-round picks to the Tampa Bay Lightning for forwards Boris Katchouk and Taylor Raddysh and two 1st-round picks. This is a steep price for the Lightning to pay for Hagel, who was largely an unknown quantity at the start of last season. However, Hagel is [...]

Seattle finally made a trade that actually looks like they got more than fair value on, netting three picks from the Flames (the highest of which is a second rounder) in exchange for versatile forward Calle Jarnkrok. What the Flames Get: The Flames already had a deep forward core, and they add an underrated scorer [...]

One of the big trade chips that the Montreal Canadiens had to offer – other than Tyler Toffoli, apparently – was defenceman Ben Chiarot. Notice that we said “was” and that’s because the Florida Panthers bolstered their blue line for the upcoming playoff run by trading for the pending free agent, just hours after trading [...]

In what looks like a pre-cursor move as we close in on deadline day, the New York Rangers turned a fourth-round pick and their abundance of cap space into a top-nine scoring winger in Frank Vatrano. What the Rangers Get: The Rangers have lost Sammy Blais for the season to injury, as well as Kaapo [...]

The Colorado Avalanche have started to get the trade deadline in motion of late. They traded for Josh Manson on Monday, and on Tuesday followed that up by trading Tyson Jost. The 24-year-old has appeared in over 300 regular season games for the Avalanche but seemed to have plateaued as a bottom-6 piece, and so [...]

The Anaheim Ducks have traded right-shot defenseman Josh Manson to the Colorado Avalanche for prospect Drew Helleson and a 2023 second-round draft pick. The Ducks get: Basically, Josh Manson from nine years ago. Plus a nice draft pick. Helleson, when he bulks up (he’s still only 20) could end up being the exact size as [...]

The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded Nick Ritchie and a conditional second-round pick to Arizona for Ryan Dzingel and Ilya Lyubushkin. Ritchie, who was signed to a two-year contract with a $2.5 million cap hit this past offseason, was demoted to the AHL in early February. He had scored just two goals in 33 games [...]

The Montreal Canadiens have traded Tyler Toffoli to the Calgary Flames for prospect Emil Heineman, a first- and a fifth-round draft pick. The Flames get: a (COVID pro-rated) two-time 30-goal scorer coming off a pro-rated 38-goal season. Toffoli is only on pace for 58 points this season, but he has 17 points in his last [...]

The Edmonton Oilers did what all bad teams do: blame the coach. Dave Tippett was fired as coach of the Oilers on Thursday morning with Jay Woodcroft taking over in his place. The Oilers are, ostensibly, in their Cup window and have looked nothing short of average-to-bad for three months now. Whether the problem is [...]

The hapless Canadiens fired their head coach just months after he was at the helm for a miracle run to the Stanley Cup Final. Even at the time of his interim hiring though, there were questions about how well Ducharme would fit in a head coaching role. Everything went right last year and he was [...]
