Fantasy Take – Latest NHL Moves

Seattle remains maybe the most mystifying team of the offseason. They did not make a single trade at the Expansion Draft, and it seemed they shot themselves in the foot by asking for too much in return. That is a huge mistake because teams are dumping good players left and right *with* draft picks in [...]

Philadelphia faltered last year and though it was clearly goaltending that sunk the team, they have decided to go out and overhaul their blue line anyway. That started with dumping Shayne Gostisbehere’s contract, trading for both Rasmus Ristolainen and Ryan Ellis. They still have Cam York waiting in the wings, but they went out and [...]

Following the signing of Barclay Goodrow in New York to six years at $3.6M a season, everyone knew that Blake Coleman would get more. He is the guy that can score and bringing what Goodrow can, only amplified and with a scoring touch, was going to bring more in free agency. How much more was [...]

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed Frederik Andersen to a two-year deal worth $9M and Antti Raanta to a two-year deal worth $4M. The Hurricanes Get: two proven goaltenders, both with a good track record and at times great. But both have struggled with injuries. Raanta in particular has trouble stringing together any meaningful length of [...]

Ever since the emergence of Ondrej Palat, Nikita Kucherov, and Tyler Johnson at varying stages of their careers in Tampa Bay, teams have been looking in the minor leagues for the next big thing. Funny enough, a lot of current/future NHL stars that were in the minors were also developed by Tampa Bay. We are [...]

The Edmonton Oilers trade defenseman Ethan Bear to the Carolina Hurricanes for winger Warren Foegele. The Oilers Get: a forward who teases offensively, but keeps getting used defensively – and he’s been good at it. https://twitter.com/DobberHockey/status/1420405068449423366 The Hurricanes Get: a good two-way defenseman with some offensive upside. He had a great 2019-20 campaign, but last [...]

The Vancouver Canucks have signed Jaroslav Halak to a one-year, $3M deal. Over his last few seasons in Boston, Halak has become one of the league’s most reliable 1B/backup options. Having said that, his 2020-21 season numbers (.905 SV%, -1.66 GSAA) did not trend in the right direction. The Bruins even decided to turn to [...]

With Stephen Johns retiring and Jamie Oleksiak moving on to Seattle, the Stars were in dire straits for their blue line. That is a huge, huge problem for a team that is pushing for a Stanley Cup this year. Dallas has attempted to solidify their back-end a bit by signing veteran defenceman Ryan Suter to [...]

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed goalie Petr Mrazek to a three-year deal at $3.8M per. The Leafs Get: a goaltender who has often teased with his tremendous potential, but it seems that every time he starts getting any momentum he gets injured. His track record: 2021 – 6 games (LBI) 2021 – 31 games [...]

The Tampa Bay Lightning have traded Tyler Johnson and a 2023 second-round pick to the Chicago Blackhawks for Brent Seabrook. This is yet another trade being made for purely (or at least mostly) salary cap reasons. The Lightning finally find a way to part with Johnson’s contract (three more years at $5 million), while the [...]
