Fantasy Take – Latest NHL Moves

There are always some trades that come out of left field and take the hockey world by surprise. This trade would certainly qualify, as Alex Nedeljkovic, the goalie who looked like the future in Carolina, was shipped off to Detroit. The return was as follows: https://twitter.com/FriedgeHNIC/status/1418261341928935427 My initial reaction was just shock. Nedeljkovic is a [...]

The Toronto Maple Leafs trade (back) prospect forward Filip Hallander and a seventh-round draft pick to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for forward Jared McCann. The Leafs get: a steadily improving two-way forward who is only now entering his prime. This trade was made just prior to the expansion draft trade deadline so one would [...]

The San Jose Sharks have acquired goalie Adin Hill and a 2022 seventh-round pick from the Arizona Coyotes for goalie Josef Korenar and a 2022 second-round pick. In Hill, the Sharks acquire a goalie who has been on the verge of becoming an NHLer for the past few seasons as an injury replacement to Darcy [...]

In a three-team blockbuster, the Vegas Golden Knights took advantage of their sideline status from the expansion draft, while the Predators and the Flyers firmed up their positions. https://twitter.com/FriedgeHNIC/status/1416477531906134022 Nashville downgraded Ryan Ellis on defence to Philippe Myers, while adding a young centre in need of a new home. They then flipped that centre for [...]

The Detroit Red Wings have acquired defenseman Nick Leddy from the New York Islanders for forward Richard Panik and a second-round pick. Leddy was the top-scoring defenseman on the Islanders last season with 31 points in 56 games. This was his best point-per-game output (0.55 PTS/GP) of the last four seasons. He also led all [...]

The Edmonton Oilers acquired veteran defenseman Duncan Keith and prospect Tim Soderlund from the Chicago Blackhawks for defenseman Caleb Jones and a third-round draft pick. The Oilers get: One of the best defensemen in the NHL. If it was still 2014. But it’s – checks calendar – 2021. Keith has been on the decline for [...]

It has been a couple of down years in a row now for Viktor Arvidsson and the Nashville Predators are further away from the Stanley Cup now than they have been since their Cup run a few years ago. This team was going to have to make some moves this offseason, and it started on [...]

The Seattle Kraken have named their first head coach. For months now, it was expected to be Rick Tocchet, but those rumours seemed to have fallen apart over the last few days. New names emerged this week, and today the team announced that Dave Hakstol will be the franchise’s first bench boss. What does this [...]

The New York Rangers have named former Vegas, Florida and Columbus coach Gerard Gallant as their next Head Coach. As much as I (and many of us) dislike the “coaching carousel”, I don’t think Gallant has peaked. And so far, what we saw in his last two stints were nothing but positives. The only red [...]

With John Tortorella gone, the Blue Jackets had been on the search for their next head coach for about a month now. The team didn’t have to go very far as they simply promoted assistant coach Brad Larsen to head-coaching duties. This kind of seemed fast as maybe there’d be more coaches available in a [...]
