Miller discusses the Hurricanes, the Tavares line, Subban and more...

Last season, the Carolina Hurricanes finished last in arguably the weakest division in the NHL. They were aggressive during the summer and went out and got Jordan Staal, sending promising Center Brandon Sutter to Pittsburgh, plus they also signed unrestricted free agent Alexander Semin.  The Hurricanes took a large financial risk signing the enigmatic and oft-injured Russian to a one year, $7-million contract, but it is paying off handsomely for both parties involved.

Jimmy Howard USA Today

Michael Amato looks at Jimmy Howard's strong play in 2013.

When Nicklas Lidstrom retired this past off-season it certainly would have given fans and many in the Detroit Red Wings organization a fearful outlook on the future. Perhaps what worried everyone more than the loss of their franchise defenseman, was the fear of the unknown. Lidstrom had been a fixture on the Red Wing blueline for 20 years. Some young fans in Detroit probably couldn't imagine a scenario without the seven-time Norris Trophy winner being a part of the squad.

Chris Wassel takes a look at the most productive line combos around the NHL.

The regular season is roaring along at breakneck speed. Scoring was definitely up in Week 7 as 11 different line combinations had ten points or more together. That is quite a jump from the previous weeks where one would see maybe five or six, sometimes less. Now let’s go “Between The Lines” one more time.

An in-depth look at Marek Zidlicky of the New Jersey Devils

If you had the opportunity to pick up Dan Boyle in your fantasy hockey league for next to nothing, I know that all of you would jump at the opportunity. What if I told you that there is another player who currently has equal-to or better-than output in all of the most commonly measured categories and that the player was only 52% owned?  That player is Marek Zidlicky.

Mike Cammalleri USA Today

Can Mike Cammalleri get his groove back? Anthony Lancione takes a look.

Former top line sniper Mike Cammalleri is really vying to remove that prefix these days. Cammalleri, once a point-a-game player, netted close to 40 goals in two separate seasons. The peak of his powers were enjoyed back in the 2008-2009 campaign (below) where he finished a hair under 40 goals while putting up points with regularity.

Wow! Apparently a visit to the windy city and the Blackhawks streak rubbed off on our friend Anthony who ran the tables last weekend, and now that puts him at 11 correct predictions out of 12 in the last two weeks. I almost feel bad for stepping in this week. Good last week for T-biz and I, picking 4 winners apiece. On the season I’m losing to my dog 56-44%... ouch. Well we’ve been getting better every week so let’s keep the momentum going into this Saturday. Based on the McLaren-Dziurzynski (very easy to spell for us Poles) scrap on Wednesday night, I wonder how much longer Saturday will be alright for fighting.

Fisher takes a look at the schedule for next week and breaks down the teams with favorable/unfavorable workloads

Conference Bias

The Eastern Conference felt that last week it was too close in the “Best Bets” section, so they decided to pull away to 22-13 this week.  However, in a rare upset, the East is also the predominant Conference in the “Steer Clear” section, taking it 19-16.  So be careful what Eastern teams you load up on this week!  A lot of Eastern teams with only two games, depending on which timeframe you’re focusing on, could be the major culprit.

Dobber Investigates the role of advanced statistics in fantasy hockey

Elliotte Friedman posted a column Wednesday night on the increased use of advanced metrics in the NHL. In it, he opines that different teams have been using their own statistical measuring tools for the last several years, not just for evaluating how to use players, but how to pay them. Advanced stats are also starting to play a role in fantasy hockey.

Daoust takes a look at salary cap bargains that can put you over the top

This week we begin a multi-part series that will cover many NHL players who are delivering good fantasy numbers at a bargain price in the shortened season. Obviously, the team that wins a league with a salary cap is the one that gets the best value out of every dollar allocated to its roster. This will include players who have a cost that is near the league minimum. Getting the most out of them can go a long way towards improving your chances of winning.
