Fantasy Impact: The Edmonton Oilers traded big winger Patrick Maroon to the New Jersey Devils for a third-round draft pick and two-way prospect J.D. Dudek.
The Oilers get: a decent draft pick, though I thought they could do a little better. The prospect Dudek hasn't been eye-popping at the NCAA level. More info on Dudek in our scouting report here.
The Devils get: a hulking, streaky winger who has a great track record for producing in the postseason (26 points in 42 career playoff games). The 29-year-old is 6-3, 227 pounds and is a proven 40-point player. The Devils needed size and they certainly addressed that.
Fantasy Players Impacted: This acquisition keeps Jimmy Hayes in the press box (or minors), pushes Drew Stafford to the press box, and reduces the role of Stefan Noesen. This also hurts Maroon in the regular season as I’m sure he’ll be on a checking line. But in the playoffs I consider him a sleeper pick who could move into the top six.
The Oilers just replaced Maroon with Pontus Aberg, and they’re auditioning Anton Slepyshev on the top line. The removal of Maroon helps those two, as well as the other wingers to a lesser extent.
Fantasy Players this helps, in order:
1. Aberg
2. Slepyshev
4. Drake Caggiula/Iiro Pakarinen
6. Maroon (playoffs only)
Fantasy Players this hurts, in order:
1. Maroon (regular season only)
2. Noesen
