Nashville has had a wild week, trading Ryan Johansen while retaining salary and then buying out Matt Duchene. They were clearing cap space for something and it appears to be a former division rival that is coming to Tennessee to help turn the team around: https://twitter.com/FriedgeHNIC/status/1675175019951824896 It is worth $4.5M a season for each of [...]
The New York Rangers have signed forward Blake Wheeler to a one-year contract worth $800,000. Wheeler had just cleared waivers and had his contract bought out by the Jets, so he needed very little time to find a new home. The fact that Wheeler signed for under $1 million shows that he is targeting the [...]
Happy Canada Day, and happy free agent frenzy day! The day leading up to free agency had plenty of news items to discuss, including buyouts, signings, and qualifying offers. The large-scale changes continue in Winnipeg. Following the trade of Pierre-Luc Dubois to Los Angeles, the Jets have placed Blake Wheeler on waivers with the intent [...]
This week we are returning to the playoffs one last time. I like to try and hold myself at least somewhat accountable for the recommendations we make here on Frozen Tool Forensics. We are returning to our Unlikely Playoff Heroes article from just before the playoffs. In that article I made a number of recommendations [...]
Friday was Day 2 of the draft, and it was also salary dump day, so to speak. The Islanders traded Josh Bailey and a 2026 second-round pick to Chicago for good ol’ future considerations. The rationale for this trade is pretty simple: The Islanders, like many other teams, are trying to shed salary. The [...]
Like many teams this offseason, the cap crunch from the COVID seasons was still in effect for the Edmonton Oilers. It meant that they would have to ship out some players to open the space necessary to possibly sign their replacements, but most certainly to extend Evan Bouchard’s contract. The casualties ended up being a [...]
The New York Islanders were facing another cap crunch and it was just a matter of who would get moved. They ended up being able to shed the Josh Bailey contract, which is a good thing for them considering his falling out of the lineup. Bailey is on the move, and he may have a [...]
The first round of the 2023 NHL Draft was Wednesday night in Nashville. Dobber Prospects’s Peter Harling was down there and seemed a bigger fan of the Arizona picks than some others. Peter is a sharp guy that I like to read so there may be more to what the Coyotes were doing here. There [...]
Vegas’ usual brutal offseason begins with the trade of Reilly Smith, one of the original “misfits”. It’s good that Smith got to be a part of the winning team in Vegas this year, but the perils of the job mean that his contract was deemed expendable by the team. Meanwhile, the Penguins are trying to [...]
The Tampa Bay Lightning were likely to lose a few players again, and they began their annual summer purge today with Ross Colton being shipped out to the Avalanche. Colton comes into a spot recently vacated by the trade of Alex Newhook, and with a few other players departing via free agency, the Avalanche have [...]
