My annual top 10 keeper league rankings lists kicks off with the best young defensemen in hockey. The Wisconsin Badgers are represented very well on this list, much like they were in 2011. I am happy to see so many players from my 2011 edition graduate on (or, in other words, play more than 25 games at the NHL level).
I have a few general rules when it comes to building a team in a fantasy hockey keeper league. One of the more important ones is to not plan beyond a two or three year window. You are not building a real NHL club, and too often I see poolies place too much of an emphasis on youth and prospects instead of trying to add players who could help them win now. Using this rule, take a look at your team(s). Can you realistically say you will have a shot at winning the league at some point within the next two or three seasons? If not, time to scrap the rebuild and start adding proven NHL talent.
Oh boy, what an opening round! After four weeks of voting in the Cage Match Tournament we have now pared the field down from 36 to 16. That’s right folks, we’re over halfway there. This past week was quite possibly the most exciting yet. We upped our output to keep up with you fantasy hockey fiends, releasing not one but two polls per week. Not only that but the matchups themselves got super interesting. Over the past couple of days you voted on the first round matchups of the final bracket and it was absolute fireworks.

Why the Kings would even consider trading heart and soul player and team captain Dustin Brown is beyond me. Ultimately the Kings made the right move by keeping him and were still able to add Jeff Carter in the process. Some fans may be upset that they weren’t able to also deal for Rick Nash, but over time I think they will realize that was one desperate move not worth making.
If ice-time and SOG are any indicators of fantasy success, this week’s column will be a good accompaniment in identifying a few trends moving forward. We’ll examine several advancers and decliners out West to help you get through that mid-season lull. Remember we’re now in the portion of the season where it’s win and move on or lose and go home. So when it comes down to making a tough decision, think of the “here and now” implications rather than the “what could possibly happen” two-three weeks down the road.
