  *   Hart finalists - Crosby, Ovechkin, and Tavares. I'd have put Toews in there, but you could make an argument for any of the three of them.   *   The NHL is heading to Sochi next year, as the league and the IOC have reached an agreement (finally). Here's my roster projection [...]

Cheap PIM Options for Fantasy Hockey Leagues

Radko Gudas USA Today

Daoust delivers the goods on some cap-friendly PIM deliverers.

Two weeks ago we looked at the underrated value of players who provide a high volume of hits and PIM. The results showed that even players who are not high-level talents at the offensive end of the rink van be very effective overall contributors in the right type of league. Furthermore, the name value of these scrappers is generally inferior to their equally-valuable and offensive-minded counterparts often making them easy to acquire. This week we will look at rugged players who signed cheap contract extensions within the last month. They may be undervalued but are certainly worthy of consideration for acquisition.

In this weeks edition of Carried Off the Ice there will be updates on the latest injuries during round one of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. During the playoffs NHL teams are extremely vague when it comes to disclosing injury information, so you will see a lot of undisclosed injuries.

  *   Carey Price is done for the series with a lower body injury. Budaj time.   *   My quick post-mortem take on the Canucks. Things aren't as rosy as they once were in Vancouver.   *   Caught most of the third and all of overtime in the Ducks/Wings game. Great, great [...]

The Islanders could very easily be up 3-1 in their series with the Pens if not for that heartbreaking loss on Sunday. Nevertheless, New York is in good shape at 2-2 and could be looking at a major upset. John Tavares and company have had no trouble keeping up with Pittsburgh when it comes to [...]

The Sabres have elected to keep Ron Rolston on as their head coach for next season. Not going for an established coach indicates to me that they are indeed going 'rebuild', and that the unproven coach can grow as the team grows. * My thoughts on the Calder finalists - I think the right picks [...]

The Evolution of Andrew Cogliano

Not even the Anaheim Ducks would have told you that coming into this season they expected to win the Pacific Division and finish as the second seed in the Western Conference. After a disappointing 2011-12 campaign that saw them sit 13th, expectations for this year would have been mild to say the least. The Ducks, however, boast plenty of talent and 2013 saw Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, and Bobby Ryan bounce back from off years. Although these three and rookie goaltender Viktor Fasth, who burst onto the scene like Julie "The Cat" Gaffney, deserve much of the credit, the Ducks have also done a good job at improving their depth.

Laidlaw here checking in for some more ramblings.   I try not to overreact to anything in the small sample size that is the Stanley Cup Playoffs but with the stakes so high I do like to see which players the coach trusts. With that in mind it’s time to get Josh Bailey and Kyle [...]
