Angus takes a look at some of the best contracts in hockey...

The term best contracts may be misleading, as it depends on what perspective is taken. Players and agents want to maximize their earnings, while general managers usually have opposing interests. For this column, the perspective of the general manager is taken. The 10 players selected with the best contracts are all outperforming what they earn significantly.

Gone from last year’s list because of new contracts are Corey Perry (8), Alex Burrows (5), and Jonathan Quick (2). Karl Alzner is also gone (he is a restricted free agent at the moment). Claude Giroux (1), Kris Letang (3), and Dustin Brown (4) all slid down the list because they are all only one year away from free agency status (although Giroux will become restricted free agents).

Logan Couture vs. Derek Stepan

This week's Cage Match - who is the better fantasy own, Logan Couture or Derek Stepan?

The last time we discussed Derek Stepan I had him losing to David Desharnais. Oops.

After a huge breakout season (44 points in 48 games) Stepan looks like a star. He always had potential but we could only wonder if it would ultimately translate. It obviously has. But this season is fraught with small sample size wonders. Many a player has put together a great half-season. Dustin Byfuglien was a point-per-game defenseman for 40 games once, ditto for Dustin Penner at forward for a similar stretch. This isn’t so much a slight at those guys but rather a reminder that strange things happen over smaller stretches of games. We simply don’t know if Stepan has the mojo to sustain those scoring rates over 82 games, especially with much more difficult travel coming next season.

These eight players are good...but not worth the cost

In last week’s column, I highlighted eight players who aren’t as bad as they might seem. This week I figured I’d shift my focus to the other end of the spectrum – eight guys who are good, but not worth the cost it would likely take to obtain them via trade or in a draft for the 2013-14 season. In other words, any of these eight guys could be a very nice addition to your fantasy team in 2013-14, but you still might be best to avoid obtaining them because you’ll likely have to pay too much of an inflated price.

Colorado Is On The Clock

It’s been nearly four years since someone other than the Edmonton Oilers has held the first overall selection in the National Hockey League Draft. Later this month the Colorado Avalanche will make the first pick after winning the draft lottery, in what was probably their greatest accomplishment in a dismal season.

I noted three weeks ago that Juhamatti Aaltonen was possibly going to Dallas, per a source. And as 'Noma' in the forum dug up - his KHL team has announced that he is going to the NHL. Dallas has the room for him, but who the coach for Dallas is will make all the difference.  [...]

We'll recap the two Conference Final Series openers momentarily, but we've been covering coaches like crazy over at CanucksArmy.com this week and I figured I'd point you to a more general post on the subject of "the impact of a coaching change" written yesterday by Blake Murphy. The results of Blake's number crunching are [...]
