Ramblings: Short-Term Adds for Saturday; Horvat, Smith, Scheifele and more (Apr 9)

If you play in a head-to-head league, your fantasy playoffs are probably well underway. So which players are decent options for that end-of-week push? The answer is just about anyone. It depends on what you need. Maybe it's the obvious goals and assists, or something more unique such as faceoffs or blocked shots. You'll see a few of those stats in here today.

You can find articles that will help you plan ahead to next week with yesterday's Ramblings by Mike Clifford and Looking Ahead by Andrew Santillo. But what if you're in short-term survival mode?

Teams with two games this weekend are as follows: Anaheim, Dallas, Nashville, Ottawa, Pittsburgh, Washington. Every other team has one game this weekend, so search for players from those six teams first. Here are a few players who jump out at me from those teams:

Cam Fowler: 33% Yahoo/60% Fantrax, 3 PTS in last 3 GP

Ryan Johansen: 35% Yahoo/56% Fantrax, 4 G and 2 A in last 3 GP

Mattias Ekholm: 34% Yahoo/49% Fantrax, 5 A in last 4 GP

Mathieu Joseph: 20% Yahoo/21% Fantrax (more on him below)

Rickard Rakell: 21% Yahoo/53% Fantrax, 5 PTS and 16 Hits in 9 GP as a Penguin

Garnet Hathaway: 11% Yahoo/22% Fantrax, averages over 3 Hits per game

If you have daily transactions, the key here is to maximize games played, so if you can find an option that is similarly ranked to someone else on your roster, don't hesitate to make the move. Deal with next week next week if there might not be a next week. Unless you're dropping Connor McDavid to add Adam Henrique, I'd probably rubber-stamp the move. You'll find a few more possible Saturday adds below as well, if you're more focused on taking things one day at a time.

And don't forget to check Goalie Post for the latest starting goalies.

With Brock Boeser out of the lineup, Alex Chiasson is being given a run on the Canucks' even-strength scoring lines. Chiasson scored two power-play goals along with an even-strength assist on an Elias Pettersson goal on Thursday, which gives him five points over his last four games. Nine of Chiasson's 16 points have been on the power play, and he's receiving first-unit power-play minutes in place of Boeser as well. Assuming Boeser doesn't suit up on Saturday and considering Tanner Pearson also left Thursday's game with an injury, Chiasson is worth an add.

As for Pettersson, hopefully you didn't sell low. He's coming through during the fantasy playoffs with seven points over his last two games – maybe motivated by new GM Patrik Allvin's recent comment that the Canucks don't have any superstars. Since mid-January, Petey has 39 points over his last 33 games. With at least three shots in each of his last four games, his wrist is fine.

Since March 9, Bo Horvat has as many goals (13) as Auston Matthews, Connor McDavid, and Kirill Kaprizov. That leads the league over that span. Horvat is also the first Canuck to reach 30 goals this season, which is also a career high for him.

If you're in a faceoffs league, Horvat came through in a huge way with 17 of 17 faceoffs won on Thursday. That was tied for the second-most faceoff wins with a 100% success rate since the stat was first tracked in 2000. Only Patrice Bergeron has won more faceoffs than Horvat (812 FOW) this season, and only Leon Draisaitl has taken more faceoffs than Horvat (1417 FO) this season.

Would you like to find a first-line center on your league's waiver wire? Travis Boyd is probably available. Boyd has been on the Coyotes top line with Nick Schmaltz. With an assist on Schmaltz's goal, Boyd has three points in his last five games. Again, a very deep league option, but I know a few of you reading this play in some incredibly massive formats.

Mike Smith is finding his game at the right time. The Oilers have won six games in a row, and Smith has won four of them himself. His last three wins have also been quality starts in which he has allowed a combined four goals. That's an impressive late-season run considering all his injuries and subpar play throughout this season. Smith has appeared to be on his last legs for several seasons, but he's managed to hang around thanks to coaching and management that seem to have undying trust in him.

Assuming Smith can avoid an injury this month, could he be Edmonton's starting goalie in Game 1 of the playoffs? That's not out of the question. On The Jeff Marek Show on Friday morning, Elliotte Friedman hypothesized that the Oilers would use some sort of tandem with Smith and Mikko Koskinen in the playoffs in order to maximize the value of both. In the near term, starting Smith in fantasy leagues right now isn't as laughable as it once seemed, even with a potential start against an injury-depleted Colorado team playing its second game of back-to-backs on Saturday.

This might be a lost season for the Habs, but don't tell Chris Wideman. Since March 5, Wideman has 14 points in his last 14 games. Seven of those points have been on the power play, while he has received just over half of his team's possible power-play minutes. The catch? Wideman was a healthy scratch for the Canadiens' previous two games. The possibility of another press box visit means he might not be the most reliable rest-of-season option, but the scoring part isn't the issue.

The Mathieu Joseph train keeps on rolling. With a goal on Thursday, Joseph has four goals, 10 points and a plus-9 over his last four games. Before you say "this isn't sustainable," Joseph has been on the Senators' top line with Brady Tkachuk and Josh Norris. As well, Joseph has back-to-back weekend games against the Rangers and Jets, giving him more opportunity to add to his numbers and to yours. Talk about a bump in value since being traded to the Senators from the Lightning at the deadline.

The Top 100 Roto Rankings will be updated for April in a week's time. Here are the March rankings. I could use some feedback, so feel free to leave your thoughts.

Hits category killer Radko Gudas was rested on Friday, but he is expected to return to the Panthers' lineup today (Saturday). Since Florida has already clinched a playoff spot and currently hold the #1 seed in the Eastern Conference, they appear ready to use some kind of load management strategy to get their key players rested for the playoffs. As someone who has both Jonathan Huberdeau and Aleksander Barkov on a team challenging for a championship and will be playing until at least the second-to-last week of the season, this is not something I'm looking forward to. But I know it's something I must also prepare for. Roster depth is key at this time of the season.

Sergei Bobrovsky appeared headed for his third consecutive really bad start and fourth of his last five games after he allowed three first-period goals to Buffalo. Yet he settled in after that, allowing the Panthers to catch up and eventually win 4-3. In spite of the win, Bob might be droppable at this point. Yes, droppable if you need a quality start this week. Heck, if I'm the Panthers, I'm a bit worried about the goaltending situation. Unless you're the 1980s Oilers, winning games 6-5 isn't a sustainable model for winning a Stanley Cup. But the Panthers have been winning plenty of regular-season games this way, so who knows.

With an assist, Huberdeau extended his point streak to 10 games. He has 19 points over that span. He's also one of three players that has reached 100 points this season.

Jeff Skinner has reached 30 goals, which is something that didn't seem possible before the season. I know the Sabres were a mess last season, but how did Ralph Krueger not figure out how to get through to Skinner? Healthy scratching him… sheesh, especially with the kind of money the Sabres have invested in him. By the way, Skinner happens to be rostered in roughly the same number of Yahoo leagues as DeBrusk and just under half of Fantrax leagues.

Credit where credit is due… and maybe even for me too…

Shayne Gostisbehere currently has 43 points and is on pace for exactly 50 points. Can he do it?

Back to Buffalo. 2021 first overall pick Owen Power has signed his three-year entry-level contract with the Sabres. The 19-year-old 6-6 defenseman could make his NHL debut as early as Tuesday. For more, see Power's Dobber Prospects profile.

Power's Michigan teammate Kent Johnson (Dobber Prospects profile) has also signed his three-year entry-level contract with the Blue Jackets, so we could also see him before the end of the season. Maybe another Michigan goal before the end of the season? This kid from my neck of the woods will be a blast to watch.

Noah Dobson's five blocked shots led all players in that category on Friday. Not only has he emerged as a legitimate PP1 option on defense, he's also a top-20 option when it comes to blocked shots (132).

Jake DeBrusk scored again on Friday, giving him seven goals in his last seven games. Now a mainstay on the Bruins' top line with Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron, DeBrusk needs to be rostered in practically all leagues. However, he's available in over two-thirds of both Yahoo and Fantrax leagues, which could be an indication that some folks have shifted over to fantasy baseball with fantasy hockey hopes now dashed. DeBrusk is the Building Block player in this week's Looking Ahead.

Looking for a defenseman to stream? Try Nick Leddy, whose value has been on the rise since being traded to St. Louis. Leddy has recorded assists in each of his last four games and has six points in his last eight games (all with the Blues). Leddy has also averaged just over half of his new team's power-play minutes, also an increase over what he received in Detroit. A Torey Krug return would cut into Leddy's value, but Krug is still listed as week-to-week with an upper-body injury.

Schenn… around Benn…

Robert Thomas won this game for the Blues in overtime. Along with an assist, Thomas has been on fire with 14 points over his last eight games. He's now a point-per-game player with 62 points in 61 games. And he's only 22 years old. He's rostered in just over half of Yahoo leagues. I guess the other half might be asleep.

The more usual names highlighted the Jets/Avalanche game. Nikolaj Ehlers and Mark Scheifele each scored two goals and added an assist, although it wasn't enough to secure a victory for Winnipeg.

Scheifele has been getting it done down the stretch, scoring 16 points over his last 10 games. After a slow start, he's bumped his scoring up past the point-per-game mark (69 PTS in 66 GP). As someone who drafted Scheifele in one league, I feel like he's kind of underperformed. Yet I should be satisfied with a point-per-game, as well as the fact that his scoring isn't drying up during my first fantasy playoff week. There's just so many more point-per-game players now than there used to be, so Scheifele doesn't stand out like he used to.

Ehlers fired a season-high nine shots while extending his point streak to five games. He has eight points over that span. Only eight players that have played at least as many games as Ehlers have a higher average shot-per-game total than Ehlers (4.0 SOG/GP).

Not surprisingly, one of those players is Nathan MacKinnon. He fired 11 shots on goal on Friday while scoring a goal and adding an assist. MacKinnon averages 4.7 SOG/GP, which is only behind Auston Matthews (4.8 SOG/GP).

Blake Wheeler missed Friday's game after crashing into the boards in the Jets' previous game on Wednesday. Winnipeg still has faint playoff hopes and could have used Wheeler in this game, so I would put this down as a legitimate injury as opposed to just giving him a rest. Hopefully this isn't a season-ending injury. I have a late trade deadline in one of my leagues, and one of my opponents acquired him hours before the Jets announced he wouldn't play. The playoffs start next week for him.

Good luck on Saturday! Follow me on Twitter @Ian_Gooding for more fantasy hockey.
