Lining Up: Goalies For The Final Fantasy Push, Including Lyon, Raanta, And Wedgewood

2023-04-04

Welcome back to another edition of Lining Up. It is now either the final week of fantasy playoffs or your league champion has been crowned at this point. If you are still playing, this week we will look at goalies who are recently getting more starts and playing well for your last few streaming options of the season.

Alex Lyon

With Bobrovsky having missed the last three games due to illness, Alex Lyon has filled in admirably and may have earned himself the opportunity to continue in the starter's role down the stretch. He is particularly hot right now with four Wins and four Quality Starts (QS) in his last five game, including matches against Toronto and Boston in that span. On the season his numbers are below average with a 3.14 GAA and 0.899 SV% but in 10 games he has a 70 QS%, which is higher than Sergei Bobrovsky's 60% in spite of that number being his best since joining Florida. Lyon is already confirmed to start against Buffalo on Tuesday night and may have some nice matchups later this week against non-playoff teams in Ottawa and Washington as well as Toronto if they continue to rest players now that the first round is set against Tampa Bay. If he continues to get starts down the stretch, stream him in if you need goalie support.

Joonas Korpisalo

Since arriving in L.A, Joonas Korpisalo has 5 W, 1.75 GAA, 0.934 SV% and 7 QS in eight games played. He has not allowed more than two goals in any start so far with L.A. Indeed, even during his tenure with Columbus this season he posted a 3.12 GAA and 0.909 SV% which, on a team that has been decimated with injuries on the blue line, is only slightly below the league average and should be viewed as a strong showing. He has provided much needed stability to the crease since being traded and looks to be leaned on steadily down the stretch. Even though L.A has some difficult games ahead, do not be deterred and start Korpisalo with confidence right now. They will face Edmonton tonight but he held that powerhouse to only two goals on 37 shots just last week.

Antti Raanta

After missing most of March due to injury, Raanta returned in style, posting a shutout against Montréal. Dating back to his last five starts into February, he has been playing very well lately posting 5 W and 5 QS in his last 6 games including an additional shutout against Ottawa. On the season he continues to benefit from his situation in Carolina with a 2.22 GAA and 0.910 SV% and should be valuable down the stretch. As Carolina has locked up a playoff spot, they could be giving their starter Frederik Andersen extra rest, allowing for Raanta to seize the opportunity to elevate your fantasy roster to the promised land. He is rostered more heavily in leagues than some other goalies in this column today, but at 43% owned in Yahoo leagues, Raanta should still be readily available.

Devon Levi

The up-and-coming Buffalo prospect made his NHL debut last week against New York and held the Cup Contenders to two goals on 33 shots. No small feat. Prior to the start of this season, Levi has seemingly been third in the pecking order behind Ukko-Pekka Luukkonnen and Erik Portillo likely due to the fact that he missed the 2020-21 season because of injury. Since then, he followed up that missed year by becoming the Team Canada starter at the 2021 WJC, earning the WJC Best Goaltender accolade and subsequently winning the Mike Richter Award and Tim Taylor Award for Goaltender of the Year and Rookie of the Year respectively in the NCAA. This season in the NCAA he has posted strong numbers once again with a 2.24 GAA and 0.933 SV% in 34 games. His fantasy stock is rising rapidly and after a promising NHL debut, look for Levi to earn a few more starts in the final few games with Buffalo, potentially as soon as tonight against Florida. Buffalo also has promising matchups against Detroit, Ottawa and Columbus between now and the end of the season. If you need a streaming option to secure your championship, join Buffalo and see what Levi can do for you.

Scott Wedgewood

Scott Wedgewood is having a quality season so far backing up Jake Oettinger with 8 Wins, 2.81 GAA, 0.915 SV% and a 57.9 QS% in 19 games. Lately he is on a nice streak with 4 QS in his last four games including a solid game last night against Nashville. Wedgewood is no doubt thriving in a strong defensive system and should continue to be relied on for spot starts. Dallas is currently tied in points with Minnesota so they may not turn to Wedgewood until into next week but note that the Stars will close their season out with a back-to-back against St. Louis. They also play Philadelphia later this week and Detroit next week, both opportune times to give Oettinger a night off. Streaming Wedgewood in for one of those games has the potential to seal a championship win in the twilight hours of the season so keep an eye on the starting goalies for those games.
