Eastern Edge: Detroit’s Late-Season Decline, Washington’s Stars, and Ottawa’s Second-Half Surge

Welcome fantasy managers to another edition of the Eastern Edge. This week we'll be taking a look at the Detroit Red Wings' late season collapse, the Washington Capitals' push for a playoff spot, and the Ottawa Senators' second half surge.

Let's get to it!

The Detroit Red Wings campaign ended in disappointment as the organization will miss the postseason for a 10th straight year. A lack of offensive production was the team’s ultimate downfall, ranking 20th overall at 2.94 goals per game played. The Red Wings goaltending simply did not hold up over the stretch run with both netminders enduring their individual struggles. Since the return to play following the Olympic Games, John Gibson has fashioned a 7-9-2 record accompanied by a 2.78 goals against and .901 save percentage including a 36.8% quality start rate and 8.27 goals saved above expected. Meanwhile, Cam Talbot put together a 1-2-1 record with a 3.38 goals against and .874 save percentage including a 0% quality start rate and -3.42 goals saved above expected. Unfortunately, that is not the level of goaltending that is going to get you to the NHL's postseason.

That being said, there is still plenty of fantasy relevance throughout the Wings roster with several individuals providing solid value. Team captain Dylan Larkin is having another productive campaign with 67 points in 73 games played (0.92PPG), sniper Alex Debrincat with the second point-per-game season of his career (84 points in 81 games played, 1.04PPG), Lucas Raymond continues to build his offensive profile with 76 points in 79 games played (0.96PPG) and #1 defenseman Moritz Seider enjoying the most productive season of his career with 60 points in 81 games played (0.74PPG).

Detroit’s prospect pipeline is well-stocked with highly anticipated youngsters such as netminder Sebastian Cossa who is having a phenomenal year with the Red Wings AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids sporting a 28-8-4 record accompanied by a 2.28 goals against and .917 save percentage including five shutouts. Fellow goaltending prospect Trey Augustine who enjoyed a dominant campaign at Michigan State going 24-9-1 with a tidy 2.11 goals against and .929 save percentage including three shutouts is also waiting in the wings (no pun intended).

Amongst the team's defensive prospects, Axel Sandin-Pellikka (21 point in 66 games played) is head-and-shoulders the most talented of the bunch having already logged some important minutes at the NHL level. Sandin-Pellikka will look to build on his rookie season and continue to carve out a spot amongst Detroit's top six blueliners.

It may not have been what the Red Wings faithful envisioned at the start of the campaign, however, the future remains bright in HockeyTown.

The Washington Capitals went down to the wire in their attempt at solidifying a spot in this year's post season. The Caps have put their best foot forward down the stretch posting a 7-3-0 record in their last ten games played, ranking fourth offensively over that span at 4.10 goals per game played.

Logan Thompson has shouldered the load over the stretch run due to an injury to backup netminder Charlie Lindgren with the Canadian Olympian fashioning a 7-2-1 record accompanied by a 2.79 goals against and .896 save percentage including a 50.0% quality start rate and 3.24 goals saved above expected with two shutouts.

The club has given their goaltenders plenty of offensive support with a number of players producing at the most important time of the year. The Great Eight (Alex Ovechkin) leads the way with 10 points in his last 10 games played, bruising forward Tom Wilson is playing above the point-per-game threshold with nine points over his last seven games played, towering forward Aliaksei Protas and third liner Connor McMichael each with five points in their last five games, and rookie forward Ryan Leonard chipping in with nine points in his last 10 games played.

This is certainly an organization on the back nine of their respective contention window, but the Caps have re-stocked the prospect cupboard to make another push in 2026-27:

The Ottawa Senators have punched their ticket to the NHL's postseason, and this Senators team has been on a heater since the calendar flipped to 2026. Since January 1st the Sens own a 25-12-5 record, ranking them fifth overall during that time, but there's more. Ottawa has shown us their true colors over the course of the second half of the season with some impressive metrics to back that up. The Senators are ranked third defensively at 2.79 goals per game played while ranking ninth offensively at 3.50 goals against per game played. Meanwhile, the club has been phenomenal in suppressing the opposing team's offence as Ottawa ranks second in shots against per game at 23.2 while ranking seventh in shots per game played at 29.5 which has the team ranked third in shot differential at +6.3.

A number of players put their best foot forward over the last few weeks of the season to push this team over the finish line and into the NHL's postseason. Most notable would be the play of Linus Ullmark who has been dominant over his last five games with a superb 4-1-0 record accompanied by a 2.00 goals against and .921 save percentage including a 60.0% quality start rate and 2.70 goals saved above expected. Star forward Tim Stutzle, who has enjoyed a point-per-game season, has seven points in his last five games played, Drake Batherson with a tidy six points in his last six games played, and team captain Brady Tkachuk with seven points in his last four games played have all helped solidify the teams spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs with production when the club needed it most.

The Ottawa Senators are playing their best hockey of the season at the most crucial time of year and will certainly be a tough out for any opponent once they drop the puck on the NHL's second season.
