Laidlaw's latest cage match - PK Subban vs. Kris Letang

I have been waiting for months, nay years, to spring a Kris Letang vs. Erik Karlsson Cage Match. It feels like it should be a compelling matchup. The problem is every chance Letang gets to sneak ahead he goes and gets hurt. He’s now officially on Dobber’s Band-Aid Boy list. Injuries are always going to be a problem with him – there’s just no avoiding that now. So as much as I would love to spout on about how Letang could be a better bet than Karlsson in a fantasy league I can’t because he can’t stay healthy long enough for that to be a reasonable possibility. And yes Karlsson is out with that gross Achilles slicing incident, which caused us to demote him from god-status to demi-god, but the freak of nature may actually play on Thursday! He’s back up to god status – nothing can hold him back. It feels like it’s taken Karlsson less time to get back from this Achilles cut than it has for Letang to get back from his groin pull (and that’s only part hyperbole). Seriously, I would love to do this Cage Match, but Karlsson is in-human. We’ve got to find a better comparison.

Enter Pernell-Karl Subban.

Russ Miller eats a bit of crow - the Islanders are better than he thought

Only two weeks ago on this very platform, I wrote with confidence that the New Jersey Devils would make the playoffs and the perennially sad sack New York Islanders would not. With the Jets only one point back of three teams, but also with one less game remaining, the playoff fates of several teams will not be determined until the coming weekend. I would love to eat crow on this one (medium-well, thank you).

Time to Downgrade

Time to downgrade Pavelski, Ryan, Staal, Sharp and Koivu says Rick Roos

Every year right before the playoffs, while information is still fresh on our minds about players from all 30 teams, it’s good to take stock of what happened during the season and how it might impact the future. Some people like to make mental notes on which guys are trending upward or might be poised for a breakout next season; but I find that doing the opposite actually can be more useful and reliable at this point in time.  So instead, I figure out which guys I can finally write off as never being able to achieve a certain level of production – I call it my “time to downgrade” guys.

This is it. Week 14 is upon us fantasy hockey players. The shortened season is six days and one game from coming to a close. There is no retreat nor surrender now. Time is of the essence in this final edition of “Between The Lines”.

In part 1 of this 3 part series, I unveil the backup goaltender, bottom defensive pairing, and fourth line.

Welcome to the sixth edition of my end-of-season Prime Cuts roster. To make this team, a player must have made a significant contribution to his respective NHL team in 2013 (especially relative to expectations). I want to reward players who came out of nowhere to produce, but at the same time I also want to recognize stellar performances from elite talents.

Niemi Doing More With Less This Season

Niemi Doing More With Less This Season

The San Jose Sharks got off to a strong start in 2013 by winning their first seven games. Of course that was overshadowed by the Chicago Blackhawks gargantuan winning streak and before long the Sharks were just an afterthought among early season headlines. They followed that up with seven straight defeats as fans inched their fingers ever closer to the proverbial panic button.

Campkin explains why Ovie is once again King of the hill in fantasy circles.

It’s official folks, the Great 8 is back and dominating the NHL and fantasy leagues alike. As we near the end to this shortened season, a question I am commonly asked is “who has been this season’s fantasy MVP?” The answer to that question is today’s Geek of the Week: Alex Ovechkin.

Prospects Ready for Playoff Spotlight

A look at some rookies who are preparing for the NHL's biggest stage.

Last season, rookies Chris Kreider and Mark Stone each made their NHL debuts in the playoffs, facing off against each other in the opening round between the New York Rangers and Ottawa Senators. Kreider, without playing a single game in the regular season, went on to tally seven points in 18 playoff games before the Rangers were eliminated by the New Jersey Devils in the Eastern Conference Final.

The 2013 lockout shortened season has shown an impressive crop of rookies who will look to follow suit if given the opportunity. Some have put themselves on the fantasy radar in the regular season, others, as Kreider did last year, will hope to do so in the playoffs.

Saturday’s Picks – April 20, 2013

Matt Duchene USA Today

Marty sets the table for the second to last Saturday of NHL action for 2013.

We didn't do too shabby in our second to last week with the selections (going five for six). Still room for improvement, though.

Unfortunately Anthony couldn’t sustain his amazing pace and got roughed up pretty badly only able to hang his hat on a Pens victory over the Panthers. I will plead Angus again to get rid of that ridiculous Photoshop of Nazem Kadri for this column. I would much prefer Matt Duchene (editor: ask and you shall receieve).
