The Avalanche Don’t Know A Goalie When They See One

It was late in the 2009-10 season and the Colorado Avalanche were in an improbable position. Just one year prior they finished with only 69 points which was good enough for dead last in the Western Conference, but now Matt Duchene could send them to the post-season with a shootout goal against the Vancouver Canucks. Duchene calmly walked in and slid the puck to his forehand and buried it past Roberto Luongo. The Avs poured onto the ice in celebration of their trip to the post-season.

As the season nears an end, we are all either making a push towards a championship or thinking about next season. Today I am going to take an in-depth look at a guy who is not only a great option to help you with your 2013 push, but also a player who you should be bumping up your draft boards next September: Troy Brouwer.

The Future in Goal for the Blues

By |2013-04-13T02:30:50-04:00April 13th, 2013|The Journey|

Jake Allen USA TODAY

The Blues have a plethora of goaltending talent. Who will emerge?

The St. Louis Blues rank third in goals against in the Western Conference. Most of this success is because of the solid contributions of St. Louis’ blue liners and the defensive coaching style of Ken Hitchcock, not goaltending. The Blues are second in the league in Shots Against Per Game Average, just behind the New Jersey Devils with 24.3 SA/G.

Coming off outstanding 2011-2012 campaigns, the goaltending tandem of Jaroslav Halak and Brian Ellliott have combined for a mediocre 13-11-2, 2.51 GAA this season.  However, out of the mediocrity of Halak-Elliott, a new starting goaltender has emerged. 22-year-old Jake Allen leads a crop of impressive St. Louis goaltending prospects and is immediately proving his NHL capabilities in his rookie season, leading all rookie 'tenders with nine wins in 13 games.

The Advantage of Band-Aid Boys (and Windex Wonders)

Editors note: Many thanks to Cyril (also known as seadawg on the forums) for updating the Windex Wonders (streaky players) and Band-Aid Boys (injury-prone players) lists. Read on for more of his thoughts on both kinds of players.

We often hear people complaining about streaky players (i.e., Windex Wonders) and injury-prone players (i.e., Band-Aid Boys), but this article is going to talk about the value those type of players can bring to your fantasy squad, in some situations.

Coming to America

Soderberg

After what has seemed like decades of speculation, prospect Carl Soderberg has finally decided to come to the NHL. The Boston Bruins inked the 27-year-old forward to a three-year contract with an unofficial cap hit of $866,667. The first year of the deal will be lost when he joins the Bruins within the next few days but having such a talented forward locked up for multiple years at such a low cost is a big deal for both the Bruins and his fantasy hockey potential.

Artem Anisimov vs. Shawn Matthias

This week's fantasy hockey cage match: Anisimov vs. Matthias.

Post-hype sleeper is a term you don’t hear often in fantasy hockey (it’s more of a fantasy baseball term) but I feel like it’s a term every poolie should get acquainted with regardless of his fantasy sport of choice. The reason is that the post-hype sleeper is quite possibly the best bang for your buck you can find. For instance, if you were patient or savvy enough to acquire any of Sam Gagner, Nazem Kadri or Jakub Voracek you’d have landed yourself a player far exceeding his projections and his draft slot if only because some of the shine had worn off because of exposure. These guys pop up every year though – after disappointing us for years they finally “get it” and produce. Joffrey Lupul and Blake Wheeler were two fine examples from last year and if you still aren’t convinced that the post-hype sleeper is a real thing well then I guess you can just keep on hitting the snooze button. This week’s Cage Match features two such post-hype sleepers, Artem Anisimov vs. Shawn Matthias.
