Making Not-So-Bold Predictions

Hiller

Being a solid fantasy goalie manager stems from your ability to understand and evaluate three different elements: circumstance, situation and statistical probability. Goaltending is a game of inches both on and off the ice, yet things happen so fast that you have to make informed decisions even faster when goalie news hits the almighty interwebs.

Every season there are players who bounce back from an off year.  Among the reasons - injuries, weaker linemates, being in a coach's doghouse, or just not a fit with a new team. Whatever the explanation, some players bounce back, some don't. Here are my top five candidates to mount a comeback in 2011-2012.

Blast from the past: David Aebischer has been invited by the Jets to come and try out. That’s where Ray Emery should have went. Sure, Aebischer will probably sign on as the No. 3 goalie, but I think Pavelec gets hurt often enough to ensure that he’ll get a recall or two.   I [...]

The Sharks will receive a second rounder as compensation for not signing prospect Patrick White (a first round pick by the Canucks) by the deadline last week to sign college players.   How burnt out does the release of the Guide on August 1 and the ensuing one or two weeks of fallout thereafter [...]

Thanks to one of my Twitter followers (Blaine Robinson) who mentioned that Eric Fehr will miss the first six weeks of the season after recent shoulder surgery (alarm bells should be ringing regarding Fehr and injuries). Blaine’s source is Eric’s brother, and I couldn’t find a corroborating source – I'll confirm when I can. [...]

Each year I write out 10 fearless forecasts (some crazier than others). Last September was no different (check my list for 2010-11 out here). I was right in a few cases, I was close in a few cases, and I was completely off base in a few as well. How did you do with your preseason predictions (preferably those that were a bit out there)? The ball for 2011-12 is already rolling over on the hockey forum.

Why is it that some GMs always seem to walk out of the draft with a team that maybe doesn’t blow you away with big names but always performs pretty well?  If you’re in a multi-category league, they’re either really lucky or they’re rigorously tracking their team as it unfolds in the draft to make sure they contribute to the categories they want.  Meanwhile, you’re looking at your roster and wondering what was I thinking?

Never screw up a draft again. Draft like a star with the Draft Guru as your secret weapon.

Zajac is out for eight-to-10 weeks with a injury. A huge hole at center, and also a huge opportunity for Josefson to play a lot of minutes. Similar situation to Hodgson in Vancouver with the Kesler injury.   I also think this means we see Elias at center, at least for the duration of [...]
