Power Hungry

With each passing day of the NHL offseason, fantasy owners look further and further into statistics, hoping desperately to find the “steal” of the draft. Almost every guide or magazine on the market will provide their reasons why each player will score X amount of points. But even in most “points-only” leagues, power-play-points is still a prevalent scoring category.  Remember that if a player scores a point on the power-play, you’re typically collecting points in two scoring categories instead of one. This article will look into some of the clutch performers from last season and whether or not they have the opportunity to replicate that success.

Fantasy Guide is updated, including more deets on the 3-Tiered Invitational and my team-by-team goals-for analysis.   Here's an interesting one - the Flyers have announced that Michael Nylander has accepted a pro tryout offer for training camp. The Jagr - Nylander stuff never dies, eh? I think he would have to beat out [...]

The Ultimate Fantasy Pool – Vegas Edition

LV

In a little under four weeks, I’ll be heading off to Vegas for some fun. One reason I am heading down is to meet up with several members of the Ultimate Fantasy Pool – a keeper league that uses head-to-head scoring. I have been in the league for two years now, and it features some stiff competition (all of our league members read this site, and one is among the regular columnists).

Over the next few weeks, I am going to introduce the league and each of the 12 teams to the DobberHockey readers. The three teams today – Biscuits & Gravy (Alex), DraperNEuroTwinSauce (Rhys), and the Bulldogs (Shannon).

If you are an avid reader of the DobberHockey website you probably are familiar with the popular mantra the “magical fourth year”. There has been plenty of debate on whether or not this concept truly exists with plenty of arguments for and against. I’ve spent quite a few hours compiling all of the numbers and doing research in an attempt to finally settle (?) the debate.

Rick Rypien was found dead in his Alberta home yesterday. The bottom line for him, as a hockey player is this – he wasn’t drafted, and yet he scratched and clawed his way into the NHL by the time he was 21. How many of us can say that? And were it not for [...]

The Backup Battles

Emery

In last week’s School of Block, I discussed different elements that make up a steady and reliable backup. Then I gave hints on which of those perfect backups would have the best fantasy value for one-year leagues. And when I looked out across the NHL goalie battlefield this morning, I saw three key fights ready to ignite when training camps begin in just one more month.

I would have lowish expectations on this one - but Fabian Brunnstrom has agreed to a tryout with the Red Wings. He would have to nudge some homegrown talent to get there, but I think a likely scenario is that he impresses enough to play for Grand Rapids and then gets his share of [...]

Greetings, from London, Ontario!   Definitely need to backtrack on my Florida statement, see comments below. Just needed time to digest it and really think about it. As I said, it was just off the top of my head. Kind of shocked, knee-jerk reaction. But they really have come along.   Those of you trying [...]
