Puck Picks: Maple Leafs Shot Volume; MacKinnon Powered Up; Carolina’s Top Line

Welcome back to Puck Picks! Each Thursday, I'll be breaking down some of my favorite NHL bets. The goal isn't just to share picks, but to explain the why behind them, helping you recognize similar value spots on your own throughout the season. I'll be tracking every pick transparently in this column, logging units won and lost as the year progresses. I'll also point out trends worth watching, like shot attempt surges, role changes, and evolving power play usage, so you can anticipate market shifts before they happen. As we are in week 2 of the hockey season – a quick recap from week 1:

7-0 for +7.54 units

Average bet ROI: 100.55% (15.04u returned on 7.5u staked)

WOW! I was not expecting that kind of start in week 1. As the picks were great, I want to temper expectations – that kind of undefeated run is driven by some positive variance. Over time, my goal is an average return of 5–10% per bet. Please don't expect every play here to hit, but we'll continue looking for edges with disciplined, smart wagers. Let's get into tonight's card.

Toronto Maple Leafs – Team Shots Under 29.5 (-115, 1.4u)

Team shots continue to be one of my favorite market inefficiencies, and this line fits the mold. Under Craig Berube, the Leafs tend to rely heavily on puck possession and shooting talent rather than sustained offensive-zone pressure, which makes them one of the more high-efficiency but low-volume teams in the league.

This total also feels inflated by a killer game by the Maple Leafs against the Red Wings on Tuesday where they had 75 shot attempts and 40 shots on goal. However, in every other game, they struggled to reach the 30=shot mark, posting 28 on 49 attempts against the Canadiens, 23 on 48 attempts against the Red Wings prior to their burst, and recently 28 on 57 attempts against the Predators.

On the flip side, The Rangers have somewhat turned things around lately, limiting opponents to around 50 shots attempts per game, and under 23 shots on goal in the past 3 games. Expect well under 60 shot attempts from the Maple Leafs and in turn, under 30 shots on goal.

Nathan MacKinnon – Power Play Point (+128, 1u)

The Columbus penalty kill has had a rough start the year — sitting around the 50% success mark through the first few games. Even with small sample sizes, that's enough of a red flag to attack, especially when you have one of the most lethal power plays, and lethal players in Nathan Mackinnon on the other side.

MacKinnon is the main driver on Colorado's power play and with newfound chemistry with Martin Necas, there's no shortage of finishing talent and offensive output. At +128, the value is clear. If this were Anaheim's PK last year (worst in the league) mid-season, we'd likely see Mackinnon's odds around -110. We'll take advantage of the early value.

Seattle Kraken – Team to Score a Power Play Goal (+100, 1u)

We'll continue to attack poor penalty killing teams. Ottawa's penalty kill is similarly down with Columbus after a terrible showing against Buffalo. Seattle has been able to capitalize on 2 of their 9 PP opportunities thus far, but they opt for a more split PP1/PP2. Therefore, we don't want to attack just one of the 10 power play players. We'll take the team to score a power play goal here.

Michael Bunting – Under 1.5 Shots (+115, 1u)

Bunting has had ZERO shots on goal in the past three games. He has just one shot attempt in the past two. His game revolves around net-front positioning rather than shot generation, and relies heavily on his teammates to generate chances. Well, his usage continues to be limited — seeing third-line even-strength minutes and second unit power-play time. At plus money, this is a strong under to target until books adjust for his reduced offensive role.

Tim Stutzle – 1+ Point (-175, 2u)

With Brady Tkachuk out, Stützle needs to be the guy in Ottawa. He proved to be just that last game scoring a goal, with 4 shots and 9 shot attempts with over 20 minutes of ice time. He is an elite playmaker and looks to be taking on more of a shooting role without Tkachuk. If Ottawa scores, Stutzle needs to be involved. I like this line to be closer to -200 against Seattle and I'll put 2 units on it. This is one of those higher-confidence plays where role, ice time, and production all align — even if the odds are shorter than usual, the edge remains.

SGP: Gabriel Vilardi & Kyle Connor 1+ Point Each (+100, 1u)

Here's another correlated-value Same Game Parlay that fits the early-season theme. Vilardi's individual point odds are appealing on their own but pairing him with Connor makes sense given their shared even-strength and power-play minutes. Taking a look at Vilardi's points, it is Kyle Connor that is much more involved in them than Mark Scheifele. If Vilardi produces, Connor's almost always part of the sequence, especially on the man advantage. I looked at pairing Connor and Scheifele, but the books have really steepened those odds now. At even money, this is still at value before books start tightening this correlated pair.

Matthew Schaefer – 2+ Shots (-180, 2u) / 3+ Shots (+185, 0.5u) / 4+ Shots (+475, 0.2u)

This is a classic escalating-ladder approach on a player with clear volume trends. Schaefer has really impressed early in the season. His shot attempt totals reflect his willingness to shoot whenever he gets the puck in space, with a whopping 26 shot attempts in the past two games! He is seeing heavy usage and even saw some time on the top power play unit last game. At -180, the 2+ is extremely valuable to take, with 3+ and 4+ being upside plays if his shot volume continues. With these bets, I'm making sure that I am making profit even if he just gets 2 shots on goal, as I do with almost all of my ladders.

SGP: Nikolaj Ehlers Goal + Sebastian Aho Assist (+330, 0.4u)

This is one of my favorite creative SGPs of the week. Ehlers' shooting confidence has been clear early on, firing the puck 18 times toward the net in his first 3 games. While he has had no success in scoring or even getting an assist thus far, his deployment remains elite alongside Sebastian Aho and Seth Jarvis at both even strength and on the top power play unit. Ehlers has the talent and the opportunities to score, and Anaheim is not the most defensively sound team, even this year as they've improved.

If he does find the net tonight, Aho is a logical candidate for an assist. He is the main set-up man on the line, with plenty of shot assists and scoring chance assists last season and he is usually responsible for the line's zone-entries. This is a nice correlated play to target for an SGP. The price at +330 gives plenty of value for a small speculative play.

Parlay: No Power Play Points – Cowan, Harley, Theodore (-182, 2.5u)

This is a role-based parlay that mirrors one of last week's most profitable themes. Cowan has yet to see ANY power-play deployment and only practiced on the top power play with Nylander taking a practice off. Although Harley got a PPP recently, he remains locked into PP2, and Theodore is still skating outside of Vegas's five-forward top unit.

These are exactly the types of situations where the books overvalue PPP stats and name recognition while underpricing usage reality. At -182, the parlay offers fair odds according to Action Networks betting calculator.

Final Thoughts

After a perfect Week 1, the key this week is staying disciplined, not chasing that same win streak, but focusing on repeatable edges. Early-season betting is still about role clarity and market lag: which players' usage hasn't yet been priced correctly, and which team tendencies are still based on last year's data.

As always, I'll be updating results every Thursday for full transparency. Please gamble responsibly and never wager more than you're willing to lose.
