Puck Picks: Point Returning to Form; Meier’s Shot Volume; Marchment’s Columbus Production, and More

Welcome back to Puck Picks! Each Thursday, I break down some of my favorite NHL bets, explain the reasoning behind them, and track performance transparently. The goal of this column isn't just to share picks, but to help you recognize why certain spots have value so you can identify them throughout the season. I'll be tracking every pick transparently in this column, logging units won and lost as the year progresses.

In the last article, we went 3-3, for a net of -0.02 units. Overall, that brings the season record to 66–57 for +10.09 units. Overall, we have a very respectable average bet return of 4%. This is around what you should expect as a successful NHL bettor. Let's see if we can get in the win column tonight!

Brayden Point Goal (+230, 0.7u)

Point essentially scored a hat trick last night, with one goal coming off the board due to an offside review. The process was still exactly what we wanted to see. He looks fully healthy again and is consistently getting into the high-danger areas where his teammates can find him for premium looks. Carolina is a strong defensive team, but that strength is already more than accounted for in the price. Tampa Bay scored six goals against Carolina in their December meeting, and Point found the net in that game. We hit this prop at +185 yesterday, and getting +230 tonight is simply too much value to pass up.

Linus Ullmark Saves Under 22.5 (–118, 1.3u)

This sets up as a spot where Detroit is unlikely to generate enough volume to push Ullmark past this number. Ottawa is allowing just 24.3 shots against per game this season, and Detroit has cooled significantly after a hot start. Over their past 25 games, the Red Wings rank sixth-worst in even-strength shot generation. Ottawa does take its share of penalties, but that actually works against a high save total, as Detroit's best chance to score comes via efficiency rather than volume on the power play. With the team shot line sitting at 25.5, the goalie under provides additional outs through a Really Bad Start or an in-game injury, making this the preferred angle.

Boston Bruins Under 29.5 Team Shots (–105, 3.5u)

Columbus has carried a reputation for high-shot games this season, ranking fifth in shots for and fourth-worst in shots against overall. However, that profile has shifted notably heading into the Olympic break. Over their past 10 games, Columbus has been far more effective at suppressing shots, ranking seventh-best at even strength, and they've been top three in that category over their past five. Their Corsi For% still sits around 50–51%, but the overall shot volume in their games has dropped meaningfully.

Boston, meanwhile, was bottom five in the league in generating shots at even strength over their past 10 games before the break. This line is still being priced too heavily off early-season data. There is an option to hedge with Boston 30+ shots at +130 on FanDuel, but the under itself stands as a strong +EV play without needing protection.

Mason Marchment 1+ Point (+105, 1u)

Since being traded to Columbus, Marchment has stepped directly into a prime role on the top line and top power play alongside Kirill Marchenko and Adam Fantilli. In that span, he's produced 13 points in 14 games and recorded at least one point in nine of those contests. A plus-money line implies a sub-50% chance of him getting on the scoresheet, which does not align with his deployment or recent production. Boston is also starting Joonas Korpisalo. Given the role, matchup, and form, this line should be much closer to -140.

Timo Meier 3+ Shots (–160, 1.4u), 4+ Shots (+162, 0.4u)

Meier is coming off a six-shot performance on nine shot attempts last night against Buffalo. The market is suggesting Pittsburgh will significantly limit New Jersey's shot volume, but Meier is the type of player who continues to fire regardless of game state or quality of looks. That tendency works in our favor for shot props.

He remains on the second power play unit, but he is clearly the trigger man there and recorded two shots on goal on the power play last night. With 18–20 minutes of usage, the 3+ line should clear comfortably, and the 4+ number offers strong upside at plus money.

Jake Middleton 2+ Blocks (–142, 1.3u), 3+ Blocks (+205, 0.4u)

📢 advertisement:

Middleton's block rate has dipped this season to 1.47 per game, but his form was trending upward before the Olympic break, averaging 2.2 blocks over the five games prior. This is primarily a matchup-driven play. Colorado ranks second in the league in blocks against and consistently fires pucks into traffic.

Middleton has recorded two blocks in each of his meetings with Colorado this season and has reached three or more blocks in five of his past 10 games overall. There is also potential for a slight bump in ice time if John Hynes opts to manage minutes for Olympic participants like Quinn Hughes and Brock Faber.

Los Angeles Kings Team Shots Under 29.5 (–110, 3.73u) AND Over 29.5 (+200, 1.9u)

This is a pricing discrepancy play, with FanDuel offering +200 on Los Angeles 30+ shots. The Kings struggled to convert shot attempts into shots on goal prior to the Olympic break, making the under the side I prefer on its own. However, with the way these two prices line up, this becomes a guaranteed-profit setup.

If Los Angeles fails to reach 30 shots, the under returns roughly 1.5 units. If they do reach 30, the over protects the position for a small gain of approximately 0.07 units. This is a clean example of exploiting market inefficiency while maintaining a favorable risk profile.

Good luck if you're tailing! As always, results will be updated in next Thursday's column for full transparency. Please gamble responsibly and never wager more than you're willing to lose.
